چکیده

This paper proposes VEIL—a novel, “plug-&-play” Virtual (Ethernet) Identifier (Id) Layer for below IP networking. The objective is two-fold: i) VEIL directly addresses the scalability, efficiency and reliability challenges facing the traditional Ethernet, while retaining its “plug-&-play” feature; ii) but perhaps more importantly, VEIL provides a uniform (below IP) convergence layer to support a large, dynamic and heterogeneous (layer-2) network that is capable of connecting hundreds of thousands or more diverse physical devices. The key idea in our design is to introduce a topology-aware, structured virtual id (vid) space onto which both physical identifiers as well as higher layer addresses/names are mapped. VEIL completely eliminates network-wide flooding in both the data and control planes, and thus is highly scalable and robust.

VEIL-Click: Creating Advanced Large-scale Ethernet Networks

VEIL (Virtual Ethernet Identifier Layer) is a novel concept for below IP networking. It addresses the scalability, efficiency and reliability challenges facing the traditional Ethernet, while retaining its simplicity. Furthermore, it provides a uniform (below IP) convergence layer to support a large, dynamic and heterogeneous (layer-2) network that is capable of connecting hundreds of thousands...

Experience in Implementing & Deploying a Non-IP Routing Protocol VIRO in GENI

In this paper, we describe our experience in implementing a non-IP routing protocol – Virtual Id Routing (VIRO) – using the OVS-SDN platform in GENI. As a novel, “plug&-play”, routing paradigm for future dynamic networks, VIRO decouples routing/forwarding from addressing by introducing a topology-aware, structured virtual id layer to encode the locations of switches and devices in the physical ...

A Plug & Play, Scalable, Robust and Namespace Independent Virtual Id ROuting for Future Networks

In this work we propose VIRO — a novel, “plug-&play” virtual identifier (Id) routing paradigm for future networks. The objective is three-fold. First, VIRO directly addresses the challenges faced by the traditional layer-2 technologies such as Ethernet, while retaining its “plug-&-play” feature. Second, it provides a uniform convergence layer that integrates and unifies routing and forwarding p...

DBridges: Flexible floodless frame forwarding

Ethernet has become the de facto layer 2 transmission technology, partly due to ease of use and cost efficiency. The cores of most data centers around the world are based on Ethernet, and large access and core networks are built without IP routing. The inherent simplicity of Ethernet has several drawbacks, including the overhead of network-wide broadcasting and the use of the spanning tree prot...

Seamless Integration of Distributed Internet Devices for Pervasive Architectures

Traditional but proprietary infrastructure networks for building control and facility automation, such as LON, EIB, etc., can lead to difficulties and costly gateway structures in approaches of integrating them into wider intranets and the internet. “SmartIP devices”, i.e. small sub-computer nodes with fully integrated IP stack, have been developed and deployed. They provide not only a replacem...
